Already thinking of ways to entertain your kids this summer?

We don’t blame you. Although summer vacation is only a few months out of the year, it can feel like an eternity if you don’t have a variety of fun activities lined up. If you have a pool installed in your backyard, you can enjoy endless hours of enjoyment right in the comfort of your outdoor oasis! In this article, we’re going to tell you all about five of our favourite swimming pool games that will be sure to keep your kids and their friends entertained until the sun goes down.

1. TREASURE HUNT

Objective:

Find as many objects in the pool as fast as you can.

Number of Players:

3-8 players

Rules of the Game:

  • Toss a variety of waterproof objects or toys into the pool, allowing them to sink to the bottom. This can include rings, goggles or balls.
  • Ready, set, GO! Allow all of the players to enter the water at once, with goggles on, and find as many items as they can before the other players.
  • Once all of the items have been located, count how many each child has and declare the winner!

2. MR. SHARK

Objective:

Don’t get caught by the shark!

Number of Players:

5-10 players

Rules of the Game:

  • Choose a child to be Mr. Shark. If nobody wants to be the shark or multiple children want to be, host an ultimate “rock, paper, scissors” tournament to decide or choose the eldest/youngest child.
  • Shark will stand at one end of the pool, facing the other way, while the rest of the children are at the opposite end, facing the shark.
  • The group of children will ask Mr. Shark what time it is, for every hour, each child must take a step.
  • When Mr. Shark declares that it is “lunch time” the group of children must run or swim back to the other end. If Mr. Shark touches you before you reach the end, you are out.
  • The last child standing is the winner and also Mr. Shark for the next round!

3. WHIRLPOOL

Objective:

Create a whirlpool in the water.

Number of Players:

3+ players

Rules of the Game:

  • This game is great for adults and children who need a break, as it requires minimal effort
  • Walk single file in a clockwise circle around the perimeter of the pool. Spread everyone out evenly.
  • Create a whirlpool and once it’s strong enough, everyone turns around and walks the other way, or float in the water and let the current of the whirlpool take you for a leisurely ride!

4. OCTOPUS ATTACK

Objective:

Don’t get caught!

Number of Players:

8+ players

Rules of the Game:

  • One player, “the octopus”, stands in the middle of the pool, while the rest of the group stands together at one end. The octopus can’t leave where they are standing.
  • The children will try to cross the pool together as a team, without being caught by the octopus.
  • If you are caught, you must join hands with the octopus and join their team.
  • The last player to not get caught wins the game and is the octopus for the next round!

5. RAFT BATTLES

Objective:

Don’t get knocked off your raft!

Number of Players:

5-10 players

Rules of the Game:

  • All players must sit on their raft or inflatable
  • Push the other players off of their raft and into the water, or simply overturn their raft
  • The last player on their raft is the winner
  • Although the water provides resistance and buoyancy for added safety, ensure all children are gentle enough with one another and abide by safety rules.
