Are you starting to get ready for the winter season?

We don’t blame you! Especially in Edmonton, summer is sadly on its way out. Although we might still be able to enjoy the occasional sunny day, it’s probably time to start preparing your swimming pool to face the cold winter season. Shutting down your swimming pool properly during the winter is very important, especially if you want to avoid issues that can result in damage your pool. Ultimately, leaving you with a nasty surprise to discover in the springtime!

Read on to find out more about winterizing your swimming pool in the safest and most optimal way.

STEPS TO WINTERIZING YOUR SWIMMING POOL

Step 1: Cleaning Your Pool

The process should begin by cleaning the pool properly. Any dirt, debris or calcification left behind can cause discolouration inside your swimming pool and even result in potential damage over the winter.

Step 2: Check Chemical Balances

It’s highly recommended that you check your chemical balance of the water inside your swimming pool. Low pH or different hardness levels can actually cause corrosion or other damage to your pool.

Step 3: Remove Accessories and Unessential Components

The next step is to remove all the accessories and additional components, including skimmer baskets, ladders, wall fittings, solar blankets and any other thing you might have in your pool.

Step 4: Drain Slightly and Treat Water

At this point, you’re going to need to drain all the pumping, filtering, heating and chlorinating equipment, lowering the water level in the pool. You will want to leave water inside the pool just below skimmer level. This water should be treated with the proper winterizing chemicals to help ensure that the liner and various components of the pool aren’t damaged throughout the winter.

Step 5: Cover and Close

Last but not least, use your trusty pool cover to add a final layer of much-needed protection. This will help prevent damage to the pool from harsh winter weather conditions. Not to mention, deter any wildlife or children from getting too curious and exploring the swimming pool.

STORING AWAY THE REST OF YOUR BACKYARD

Don’t forget to also take care of the rest of your backyard. During the frigid Edmonton winter, you’re likely not going to make use of many of your accessories or furniture, like chairs, tables, umbrellas, BBQs or fire pits. If possible, store them in a safe, dry place or use protective covers to shield them from the winter elements.

Extreme cold, ice and snow can ruin many accessories and can compromise the structural integrity of patio furniture. If you have something that’s made of wood, it is particularly important to preserve it by covering with a thick plastic cover or sheet. This will offer further protection from moisture, cracks, and other issues.
