How Often Should I Change the Hot Tub Water?

There are many misconceptions about spa water quality and how to keep it sanitary. Often times, those who are new to the world of hot tub ownership think that spa chemicals and the circulation system will do all of the work to keep the water clean. While in fact, you must drain the water, clean the tank and refill the water as well. Regardless of your experience level, changing the water in your hot tub is a rather simple process.

How Often Should I Change My Spa Water?

As a general rule of thumb, you should aim to change the water three to four times a year. This number can change depending on several factors, which we will dig into below.

Changing the water in your hot tub consists of opening the drain and letting the water out, cleaning the interior with a soft cloth, sponge or a non-abrasive walnut cleaning pad and a hot tub cleaning product. Note: only use products that are specific to cleaning a hot tub or swimming pool. Do not use household cleaners as they will leave a residual which will affect the water chemistry and, in most cases, cause foaming. Rinsing it out with a hose, inspecting the internal components, including the hot tub filters and jets, refilling the tank with fresh water, and treating the water with products accordingly.

Overall Usage

Hot tub owners who are daily users will discover that maintaining the proper water condition is a weekly endeavor. Chemical usage and how often you change the water will increase with more enjoyment of your hot tub. The more chemicals that you are having to use with your hot tub water, the more often it is that you will need to complete a water change.

If you use your hot tub only a few times a month, you will likely only have to change the water three times a year. Those who are using their hot tub a weekly or almost daily basis may have to change their hot tub water four or sometimes five times a year.

If you own a Sundance® Spas hot tub with the MicroClean® Water Management System, you will be able to extend the life of the water much longer, usually changing water yearly.

Ongoing Maintenance

Hot tubs should have the water tested before every use in order to ensure the proper chlorine and pH levels. At the very minimum, a water test should be done at least three times a week and the water treated as required. Listen for unusual sounds coming from the system, check your filter and give it a rinse, inspect your hot tub cover, and wipe down any dirty surfaces. Having the water professionally tested once a month is recommended to help you maintain clean clear water. Most hot tub dealers offer a computerized water testing service.

The more you tend to and care for the water in your hot tub, the less often you will have to change the water. On the other hand, water that isn’t cared for regularly will most likely have to be changed more frequently.

Quality of Chemicals

No two chemicals are created equal. If you are trying to neutralize spa water on a tight budget and opt for cheaper chemicals, it can lead to more water changes and damage to your equipment. Keep in mind that you get what you pay for. Although it may seem like a great idea in the moment to opt for the chemicals with the lower price point, this can cause more work for you in the long run. Also, the dosage required for the cheaper chemical is much more than a comparable, quality product available from a pool/spa store. If you factor in how much faster you use a bottle of the cheaper product, you will realize that buying cheap is a false economy.
